iPhone 14 Flash Greyed Out: Camera Module, Overheat Lockout, or Flex

When the torch button greys out and the camera flash stops firing, iPhone 14 owners assume the LED died. The LED almost never dies alone - the symptom is usually a lockout, a camera module companion fault, or a flex problem. Work this ladder top to bottom and you will rarely order the wrong part.

Rung 1: Software Lockouts First (Free)

iOS disables the flash when it believes conditions are wrong. Check before anything else:

  • Low Power Mode plus high battery draw - some builds grey the torch until conditions ease.
  • Overheat lockout - if the phone was hot (car dash, gaming, charging under a pillow), flash disables until cooled. Ask the customer when it started.
  • Camera app left in a stuck state - force-quit Camera, toggle the torch from Control Center, then test.

A restart clears roughly half of walk-in flash complaints. Do not skip this rung.

Rung 2: The Camera Module Connection

On the iPhone 14 the LED flash is driven through the rear camera assembly's flex. A camera module that suffered a drop can lose the flash line while photos still work. Symptoms that point to the module or its seat:

Companion symptom Interpretation
Rear photos also fail or show black viewfinder Camera module or connector fault - inspect seating first
Photos fine, flash only dead Flash line on the module or the flex below it
Started after a screen or camera repair Misseated camera connector - reseat before ordering

Reseat the rear camera connector under magnification - a partially seated camera flex kills the flash line alone. If reseating fails and photos are otherwise healthy, a replacement module from our cameras collection solves the flash; the iPhone 14 collection holds the companion flexes.

Rung 3: Flex and Board-Level Causes

If a known-good camera module still produces a greyed torch, the fault is below the module: the interconnect flex or, rarely, the flash driver rail on the board. Indicators: flash died after liquid exposure, or the flashlight flickers before greying. Liquid cases need board inspection - a cleaning session may save the board, but quote it honestly as board work, not a camera swap.

Bench Checklist

  1. Restart and test - free, five minutes.
  2. Check for heat/charge conditions - free.
  3. Reseat the rear camera connector - free, ten minutes.
  4. Swap a known-good camera module - fifteen minutes, confirms the module.
  5. Still dead on a good module? Board referral.

FAQ

Does the flash share a part with the camera? On the iPhone 14 the LED is driven through the camera assembly's flex, so module faults commonly take the flash with them.

Can iOS updates break the torch? Transiently, yes - a stuck process. Restarts fix it; restores fix the stubborn ones.

Is a greyed torch ever the battery? Severe low-battery lockouts grey the torch, but they resolve above roughly 5% charge. Anything else is on this ladder.
