Face ID on the iPhone 11 Pro is the single most fragile assembly in the phone. Independent shops lose Face ID roughly 5% of the time during screen replacements — most often because the dot-projector flex has torn inside the earpiece speaker bracket. The good news is that restoration is mechanical and does not require board work.
How Face ID is wired on this model
Face ID pairs the infrared camera, the flood illuminator, and the dot projector into a single bracket that bolts onto the earpiece speaker assembly. Apple pairs each trio to the logic board at the factory — which means if the bracket is replaced with an aftermarket unit, the customer's Face ID will throw an "unable to activate" message and never work again.
The two ways to lose Face ID during a screen swap
- Torn dot-projector flex. The flex runs from the projector to the camera-side connector under a steel plate. Catching it with a spudger is the most common cause. The bracket must be transferred from the old screen to the new one — never use the bracket that came with the aftermarket screen.
- Loose camera-side connector. Less common, easier to fix. Reseat the connector, refit the bracket screws to 0.6 N·m, and Face ID is restored on next boot.
The procedure for restoring Face ID
- Open the 11 Pro per the standard pentalobe + tri-point procedure. Disconnect battery first.
- Remove the earpiece speaker bracket — three screws, fragile plastic clips. Lift gently, do not pry sideways.
- Inspect the dot-projector flex. If torn, replace with the customer's original bracket. Aftermarket brackets will not work.
- Inspect the connector on the logic board. Reseat firmly. Look for moisture indicator stickers around the connector.
- Refit the bracket, reconnect the battery last.
- Boot to Settings > Face ID & Passcode, enrol the customer's face again.
Tips that save the day
If Face ID continues to fail after a successful bracket transfer, run the phone through a full DFU restore once. iOS sometimes caches a "Face ID hardware missing" flag that clears after a clean restore. If it still fails, the dot projector itself is damaged and the only repair path is Apple's authorized service — quote accordingly.
