iPhone Battery Replacement Guide: When & How to Swap It

iPhone Battery Replacement: When to Do It & How to Swap It Yourself

Battery replacement is the most common phone repair in the world — and one of the easiest to learn. If you're a repair shop adding services or a DIY owner extending your phone's life, this guide covers everything: when to replace, what to buy, and how to swap safely.

When Should You Replace Your iPhone Battery?
Battery Health below 80%: Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. Below 80% maximum capacity, performance management may kick in.
Sudden shutdowns: phone dies at 20–30% — classic aging-battery symptom.
Slow charging or heat: batteries that take forever to charge or run hot need attention.
Performance throttling: if apps load slowly and iOS is limiting performance to prevent shutdowns, it's battery time.
Physical swelling: if the screen is lifting or the back is bulging — stop using the phone immediately and replace the battery as soon as possible. Swollen batteries are a fire risk.
Choosing the Right Replacement Battery

Not all batteries are created equal. Key specs to check:

Capacity: match the original mAh (or slightly higher for premium aftermarket cells)
Quality cell: reputable cells hold charge longer and are safer
Pre-installed adhesive: essential for secure mounting and easy installation
Protection circuit: quality batteries include proper overcharge/over-discharge protection
Testing: batteries should be charged, tested, and matched before shipping
Tools You'll Need
Pentalobe and Phillips screwdrivers
Suction cup and plastic opening picks
Isopropyl alcohol (to soften battery adhesive)
Plastic pry tools (avoid metal near the battery)
ESD-safe work surface
Step-by-Step Battery Swap
Power off and remove the two Pentalobe screws at the bottom.
Open the display with a suction cup, then disconnect the battery connector first using a plastic pry tool.
Remove the battery shield plate and its screws.
Loosen the battery adhesive. If there are pull tabs, pull them slowly at a shallow angle. If they break (common), apply a few drops of isopropyl alcohol around the battery edges, wait 1–2 minutes, then pry gently with a plastic tool. Never pierce the battery.
Lift the battery out by the bottom edge, not by the connector.
Place the new battery with pre-installed adhesive, press to seat, and replace the shield plate.
Reconnect the battery connector, close the phone, and replace the bottom screws.
Charge to full and calibrate: check Battery Health shows a new percentage.
⚠️ Safety note: swollen or damaged batteries must be disposed of properly. Never dispose of lithium batteries in regular trash — recycle them through certified e-waste programs.
